“Sexting can really be a pattern of emotional infidelity,” Kerner says. “It’s cheating without sex, but the intensity of it and the feeling can be just as big, and can still lead to divorce.”
Kerner does say “there are degrees” of how inappropriate such texts are, but that line is pretty easy to cross: “As soon as you are hiding something from your spouse, and you say something sexually suggestive, you’re keeping a secret and that’s the beginning of a negative chain of events. I think it begins when you start to keep a sexual secret.”
While men seem to be leading the sexting charge, women, of course, sext too, although with a different focus, says Kerner. “Men will do it more for the sexual titilation, photos of genitals, etc. Women will send sexy photos, but generally it’s more about the emotional, so it’s less lewder.”
As for Weiner, Kerner isn’t convinced the scandal is over. “I think there will be a a long trail of things going back,” says Kerner. “He strikes me as a serial womanizer… My take is Weiner is a thrill seeker…and he wants instant gratification.”
